Graduate Admissions

Eligibility

Members of the U.S. Armed Forces, American employees of the U.S. government, and their family members located in a contract country may enroll in graduate courses through University of Maryland Global Campus Europe if they meet admission requirements. U.S. military policy requires a valid identification privilege card issued by the military services. Card validation is required after completing the online application. All eligibility questions should be directed to the staff at the UMGC Europe Headquarters.

Orientation and Getting Started

Local UMGC representatives and academic advisors stand ready in military communities to provide on-site assistance with admissions, registration, financial aid, advising appointments, and more.

Before the beginning of each session, UMGC holds special online webinars and on-site orientations for new and prospective students. At on-site open house events, you have the opportunity to learn about UMGC and its programs, student services, academic and career options, and meet faculty members and fellow students. When you participate in these special events, you may have your application fee waived.

Admission Requirements

At UMGC, we offer a streamlined admissions process that does not require the GRE or GMAT.

Applicants for graduate certificate and master's degree programs must complete and submit an application for admission along with a nonrefundable application fee. To be admitted, you must have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited degree-granting university or college. Degrees from other accredited institutions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

For most programs, you can enroll in and begin earning your first 6 credits at UMGC as long as you submit an official transcript(s) demonstrating completion of a bachelor's degree by the last day of the first term of enrollment at UMGC. However, for some programs, we must receive and verify your official transcript(s) demonstrating completion of a bachelor's degree prior to admission. See the Graduate Admissions Policy for details.

Regardless of your program, if you were educated outside of the United States, your official transcript(s) must be submitted and evaluated prior to admission and additional requirements may apply.

GoArmyEd

All eligible active duty, National Guard, and Army Reserve students must complete the Common Application online in the GoArmyEd portal.

Procedures for Admission

To apply for admission, you must complete the following steps:

  1. Complete an online application for admission via MyUMGC
  2. Pay the nonrefundable application fee.
  3. Request an official transcript from the bachelor’s degree granting institution, even if you attended another institution in the University System of Maryland. However, if the bachelor’s degree was awarded by University of Maryland Global Campus (Stateside, Asia, or Europe), you do not need to request a UMGC transcript. If you received a bachelor’s degree from an institution outside of the United States, the transcript must be evaluated by an independent agency. The section on international applicants follows. UMGC Europe reserves the right to request additional transcripts.

Addresses for most U.S. institutions of higher education may be obtained through reference materials generally available at education centers, libraries, or on the web.

International Applicants

If you were educated abroad, you must submit the following to be considered for admission:

  • Official documents indicating successful completion of the equivalent of a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.

    If you were educated outside the United States, you must have your official transcripts evaluated by an independent evaluation service. The evaluating organization will send a copy of the evaluation both to you and to The Graduate School. UMGC accepts credit evaluations from any National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES)–approved organization, including World Education Services (WES). Here is a list of NACES-approved agencies.

  • Proof of English language proficiency.

    If you did not earn your baccalaureate degree from an institution in an English-speaking country, you must demonstrate English-language proficiency to be eligible for admission. (Find a complete list of countries recognized as English-speaking.) The following are accepted as proof of English proficiency:

    • The Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) with a minimum score of 79
    • The paper-based TOEFL with the Test of Written English (TWE) with a minimum score of 550 and a minimum score of 4 on the TWE
    • The International English Language Testing System (IELTS)—including both the academic writing and academic reading modules—with a minimum overall score of 6.5
    • The EIKEN Test in Practical English Proficiency with a minimum grade of Pre-1.
    • Applicants can also demonstrate English proficiency by submitting an official transcript indicating completion of at least 12 credits of graduate coursework with a grade of "B" or higher at an approved degree-granting university or college. All credit is subject to review before being accepted as evidence of English proficiency.

You must arrange to have official score reports sent directly from the testing agency to The Graduate School. The TOEFL score recovery code for UMGC is 5804. Test scores must be less than two years old.Merely providing these documents does not ensure admission. An interview also may be required. The official transcript evaluation must be submitted and evaluated before admission is considered.

Restrictions

You may be admitted to only one institution in the University System of Maryland at any one time. You may be admitted either as a graduate or as an undergraduate, but you may not hold both classifications simultaneously. Graduate students may be enrolled in only one degree program at a time. Your most recent application for admission invalidates any previous admission.

You may be admitted to and take courses in only one graduate program at any time. Application for admission to a second graduate program is not permitted until notification of resignation has been presented to the first program. If you are admitted to any other graduate program in the University System of Maryland, you must notify UMGC. You retain active status for two years even without being registered in the program. However, after two years without a completed graduate course, you must submit a new application.

Evaluation of Transfer Credit

At University of Maryland Global Campus, you can get a head start on a career-boosting graduate program with transfer credits. You could be eligible to transfer up to 6 credits toward your master's degree or up to 3 credits toward your graduate certificate. 

You may transfer exactly 6 credits toward the MBA or MS in Cybersecurity Technology program if you earned those credits at an approved institution and the course content is equivalent to the introductory course. You must complete a Graduate Transfer Credit Evaluation to find out if your credits may transfer.

As you are considering this transfer process, make sure your previous credits meet the following criteria:

  • You earned the credits at the graduate level.
  • You did not use the credits to meet the requirements for any degree you previously earned or expect to earn.
  • You earned the credits within the time limit for the degree or certificate.
  • You earned a B or better in the courses considered for transfer. (These grades will not be included in the calculation of your GPA at UMGC.)
  • You earned the credits at an approved institution.
  • The credits are either equivalent to graduate-level coursework or recommended for graduate-level credit by the American Council on Education.
  • Your advisor and program director will determine which transfer credits are relevant to your program.

  • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Higher Education
  • Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities
  • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission
  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges Commission on Institutions of Higher Education
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
    Commission on Colleges
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities

Credits from other accredited institutions may be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Academic Advisement Report

Upon application, your academic background is evaluated by the admissions team to determine eligibility for enrollment in a graduate program.

Upon official admission, you will be able to view your academic advisement report through MyUMGC which lists all course requirements for graduation including:

  • UMGC courses required for degree completion.
  • Approved transfer courses, if applicable.

You must successfully complete all coursework stipulated on the academic advisement report to be eligible for graduation.
